Cats run the risk of sticking their noses and tongues into things that might be poisonous every day. Cats usually know what doesn’t taste right to them, so they don’t eat it. And most of the time things that don’t taste good to them aren’t right for them to eat.
You will probably know when your cat has gotten into something that is poisonous. And it won’t be fun for you or your cat. The symptoms of poisoning in cats include difficulty breathing, internal pain, minor or major trembling, vomiting, and crying. Because there are so many things that are poisonous to cats, you may not be able to figure out what exactly it was that made your cat sick. Regardless, if you think your cat has been poisoned, you need to act quickly.
First, you need to make sure your cat vomits to get the poison out of its system. This is especially important because if the poison gets into your pet’s blood stream, it could be deadly for your cat. If you need to force your cat to vomit, you should try feeding your cat a mustard powder/warm water mix or a salt/water mix. After you get your cat to vomit as much as you can, take some of the vomit and put it in a bag and take it along with you to your vet. She can use that to help determine what it was that your cat ingested in order to best diagnose your pet.
There are many things that are poisonous to cats. Many of them are things that your cat wouldn’t touch to begin with, such as household cleaners, bleaches, antifreeze, cyanide, insecticides, weed killers, antibiotics, paint, pesticides, and talcum powder. Several different animals are actually poisonous to cats, as well. These include toads, like ones found in the deserts of the southwest United States and in Florida. If your pet has licked or contacted a toad, you need to clean your cat’s mouth and taken to the vet. Some birds are also poisonous to cats. These birds may have eaten herbicides or insecticides that may not be dangerous to the bird, but can be harmful to your cat. If your cat has eaten a bird and is sick, you need to make sure your pet vomits and gets medical treatment. Further, one of the most little-known poisonous items for cats is plants. Several different types of household plants can cause serious problems in cats. You need to make sure you keep your plants as much out of reach of your cats as possible.
